Alex Wiley is getting ready to drop his debut mixtape, Club Wiley, on June 4th. Throughout the month of May, we’ll be dropping a slew material from the mixtape as well as loosies and b-sides that didn’t make the final track list. First up is “Icky Woods” a light-hearted vintage rap record featuring Alex Wiley alongside our homie Action Bronson. The two trade bars about eating falafels, Tood Hundley autographs, the bible, and much more, with production supplied by Class President and AEMMP veteran Thelonious Martin.

AEMMP Records @ Columbia College Chicago's "Biggest Mouth 7"

Columbia College Chicago’s largest, most anticipated event of year, Biggest Mouth 2013, was full of AEMMP reps this year. 150 bands auditioned to play at Metro Chicago on April 24th in front of hundreds of their peers and fans, but only 12 of those bands made the cut. Check out the recap video below:

The lineup consisted of the following bands/artists: Earl., Cosater, Upsin Hounds, Daryn Alexus, Foreign Shores, Alma, Armitage, Savanna, Kylie Marcus, Julius Daye, and American Wolf. They competed for a cash prize up to $1000, along with GRAMMY U memberships, free rehearsal/studio time from Music Garage, and a prize package from Shure, including mics and headphones.

Daryn Alexus, R&B artist from Washington D.C. who featured on “The Prerequisite”, would take first place with a stellar performance including a band, background singers and dancers.

Fleaux, who is also featured on “The Prerequisite” album, was the host of the event.

Although The Break has been around since 2007, the Park Ridge natives have spent the past several months having barely any time to breath. Gracing the stages of Metro, Lincoln Hall, and Beat Kitchen, just to name a few, the catchy riffs and melodies of the band make them enjoyable regardless of your prefered genre. With reviews from WGN TV and Chicago Sun Times, The Break has no intentions of slowing down anytime soon.

Watch Dave Grohl, Trent Reznor, Josh Homme Play "Mantra" From the Sound City Soundtrack Live:

Looking for a movie to see while you’re down at SXSW? Look no further than Dave Grohl’s directing debut: Sound City.

Grohl has been promoting the film and soundtrack with a tour featuring an all-star band, the Sound City Players. The Players will perform at Stubb’s on March 14 during SXSW. Grohl will also deliver the SXSW keynote address on March 14.

Watch this exclusive video of the band performing “Mantra” at his Studio 606 space for the documentary’s soundtrack. Grohl takes control on the drums, starting off focused and somber and unleashing his headbanging fury as the track builds steam. Queens of the Stone Age’s Josh Homme provides the driving bassline while Nine Inch Nails’ Trent Reznor creates a swirling vertigo of piano. The trio’s chemistry is impeccable as they journey through the almost eight-minute track without a word.

There will also be a screening of this movie at Columbia on March 20th!

[FEATURED] Artist - Just Left

Opening up for bands like Fall Out Boy, All Time Low, and Allstar Weekend, Just Left has become more than your typical pop-punk band from Chicago. The band has been together long enough that playing as a group has become natural to them and performing in front of their fans is no different than performing in front of their closest friends. The band continues to challenge themselves to write songs that not only they can relate to, but those listening to their music as well. With that, Just Left has created a fan base of people who are just as passionate about their music as the band themselves.

You can listen to the band on Bandcamp, Spotify, and check out their new music on YouTube. Just Left will also be performing at Metro on April 26th with The Fold and more bands to be announced in the upcoming weeks.

For those not in the know, one of the greatest days of the year is approaching soon: Record Store Day (April 20th). Being teased with exclusive releases, the organizers behind the annual analog holiday have just announced their pick for the Official Film of Record Store Day 2013: Last Shop Standing - the Rise, Fall, and Rebirth of the Independent Record Shop.

The film is directed by Pip Piper and based on Graham Johnson’s book of the same name, Last Shop Standing, and documents the hardships endured by independent record stores (primarily in the U.K.), as well as “the influence of the chart, the underhand deals, the demise of vinyl, and rise of the CD,” according to a press release.

“Last Shop Standing is a great window into the minds of record store people and artists who share a passion for music,” Michael Kurtz, the newly knighted co-founder of Record Store Day, said in a statement. “It’s just plain cool and anyone who supports record stores, or worked in a record store, or supports their local record store, will really enjoy it. Record Store Day is proud to make it our official film for 2013.”

The documentary features talking head segments from more than 20 shop owners, several music industry leaders, and a number of musicians, including Johnny Marr, Billy Bragg, Paul Weller, Richard Hawley, and more. Up top is the movie’s trailer, which packs in cameos from all of the aforementioned artists as they wax nostalgic about a time before mp3s and streaming services. The preview also sneaks in a few dispiriting facts — in the 1980s, there were more than 2,200 independent record shops in the U.K., but by 2009 there were only 269 stores left.

Last Shop Standing has been screening in the U.K. for the last four months, and this spring the doc will make its U.S. debut. The week before Record Store Day, participating stores across the country will offer screenings of Last Shop Standing in their communities. Then, on April 20, a deluxe edition of the film, stuffed with 20 minutes of extras and outtakes, will be available on DVD.

“Last Shop Standing is more than just a film about collecting records,” Johnny Marr said in a statement. “It’s about passions, and people caring about what they love. It is a story about records, and some other very important things.”

[FEATURED] Artist - Carbon Tigers

Last February, Carbon Tigers woke up to their van, carrying over $30,000 worth of equipment they had received after winning Columbia’s Biggest Mouth, had been stolen. The incident occurred in the midst of recording The Dover sessions and a slew of upcoming shows the band had been preparing for. Since then, Carbon Tigers has more than recovered, playing shows at The House of Blues, Subterranean and Bottom Lounge with Further Seems Forever, to name a few. It’s impossible not to bring up Carbon Tigers when talking about some of the most influential bands that have attended Columbia within the past 5 years and their presence in the Chicago music scene continues to be as strong outside of Columbia as it is in. You can catch Carbon Tigers this Thursday at The Empty Bottle and look out for their first full length album schedule to be released this summer.
